New challenges for energy system in the Mediterranean Region


November 2-6, 2014 (Venice - IT) – 24 energy experts, from non-EU Mediterranean countries, participated in the training course on the evolution of the energy system in the Mediterranean Region, organized by Enel Foundation in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME), the Renewable Energy Solutions for the Mediterranean (RES4MED) and the Venice International University (VIU) .

Between November 2 and 6, Enel Foundation organized a training course on "New challenges for energy system in the Mediterranean Region", in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME), the Renewable Energy Solutions for the Mediterranean (RES4MED) and the Venice International University (VIU).

The course was addressed to 24 energy experts, working in ministries, regulatory authorities and energy companies of non-EU Mediterranean countries. The course aimed at providing an overview of the current scenario of the energy markets in the Mediterranean Basin and was structured in 4 days of lectures by international experts, complemented by case studies and working group activities.

Indeed, the participants were divided into groups in order to analyze the issues discussed during the lectures. Then the groups presented the results of their activities during a special session scheduled on the final day of the course, sharing their analysis on specific topics of interest with other participants.

On November 6, there was also held a final roundtable moderated by Nicolò Sartori (Senior Fellow, IAI). The speakers of the roundtable were: Adam Brown (Senior Energy Analyst, IEA), Felice Egidi (Head of Regulatory Affairs, Enel Green Power), Roberto Vigotti (Secretary General, RES4MED), Matteo Codazzi (Chief Executive Officer, CESI) and Benjamin Gallèpe (Director, MEDREG Secretariat).

They addressed the main topics discussed during the course: policies and regulatory framework in the Mediterranean Region, with a focus on the development of renewable energies, interconnection systems in the Region and with the north shore of the Mediterranean Sea and business models for the transition to a modern and integrated energy system.
