1993-1998: development and innovation
1993: E7 summit - In May, the E7 summit takes place in Florence, thus
bringing together the seven largest global power companies, among which Enel.
The meeting aims to develop common strategies to ensure the most rational use
of electricity, improve the production and distribution system, minimizing the
environmental impact.
1994: new plants from renewables - In 1994 and 1995 new plants from
renewable sources are opened: a 3 MW solar photovoltaic power plant, the
largest in operation in the world, is realised in Serre Persano. In Upper Nurra
the 1 MW Gamma 60 wind turbine is put into operation, whilst two wind power
plants are put into operation in Frosolone and Collarmele.
1996: the 1050 kV project in Suvereto - Under the program for developing
innovative power, Enel comples a high voltage pilot line trunk (1050 kV) about
3 kms long, in the Suvereto (Livorno)experimental area. This achievement marks
a technological achievement of great importance even for national manufacturers
which, on the basis of this experience, may qualify on the international high
tension markets.
1998: Wind third national mobile operator - At the end of June, Wind,
the telecommunications company owned by Enel, France Telecom and Deutsche
Telekom, wins the race for the mobile phone license, thus becoming the third
national operator. In July 2000, with the exit of Deutsche Telekom, the
shareholding is divided between Enel and France Telecom.
