Zero Emission Life

Limiting of CO2 emissions has an important role in setting environmental strategies and is a key point in Enel’s research agenda. The increasing use of fossil fuels produces an impact on the atmospheric composition, causing severe climate changes. For this reason, the main objective sought by the international community focuses on reducing greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide emissions.

Enel stands out as a leader in research and innovation to oppose climate change, not only by committing itself to their abatement, but also by developing highly ambitious projects.
In particular, its innovative investment projects - worth 800 million euros - will reduce CO2 emissions by at least one million tons a year.

The climax of this program will be when Enel will construct the first carbon dioxide non-emitting power plants in 2020. The company has developed important partnerships with major universities and research institutes in Italy and abroad: ENEA,CNR, INGV, MIT, IFRF. It also works closely with the Ministries of Economic Development, Environment and Research and has participated in the drafting of the European "Zero Emission Platform" program.
This vision originated a of research and experimenting program on hydrogen, the last frontier for the development of a "chimneyless" power plant.

With this process, energy production could become totally clean, because hydrogen combustion only releases water vapour in the atmosphere.
