Enel is a model of development and efficiency, the Huffington Post stated. In an article on the liberalization of the electricity market, the highly esteemed US blog mentions Enel as an example of growth and technological development following the trans position of the European directive Nr. 96/92/CE.
According to the Huffington Post, in 2001 Enel launched the largest project in the world to modernize the electricity grid. Now Enel has more than 32 million smart meters installed and working in Italy and, thanks to these devices, it can offer its clients a great amount of services tailored to its customers’ needs.
The two billion euros required to install these smart meters in Italy have been quickly amortized, since they allow an annual saving on operational expenses.
After having played a central role in the history of Italian electrification and having implemented development and modernization policies following the market’s liberalization, presently Enel is Italy’s greatest electricity company and the second listed utility in Europe in terms of installed capacity. It is also Italy’s second operator in the natural gas market, with about 3.1 million customers.
After and alongside the development and improvement of its network, between 2007 and 2009, Enel purchased 92.6 of the Spanish power company Endesa. Thanks to its international strengthening and the establishment of Enel Green Power in 2008, the Enel Group is now active in 40 countries in 4 continents, with a net capacity of about 96,000 MW, providing electricity and gas to some 61 million customers.
