Safety, first of all

From November 8 to 14, Enel promotes its International Safety Week. This year’s third edition  involves employees and contractors from the 40 countries where the Group has a presence

Enel’s International Safety Week 2010 began with the première of director Corso Salani’s “I casi della vita” a documentary-fiction film produced for the Company. This is the third edition of the Company’s initiative, which is designed to focus on safety, key word and distinctive trait of Enel’s daily life in all of the 40 countries where it has a presence. The event held from November 8th to 14th  is an opportunity for overall reflection, communication and information on work year-around, allowing continuous advancements  towards the common “Zero accidents” objective.

Speakers at the inauguration that took place at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome included Enel’s CEO Fulvio Conti, Piero Gnudi, Enel’s President, and Fulvio Sacconi, Minister of Labour and social policies, together with representatives of institutions, universities and the labour sector, all jointly committed to improve safety. This introduction was the kick-off for the week that centers on Enel’s safety activities in the world.

The way in which the number of both events and participants have increased between the 2008 and the 2009 editions of the “International Safety Week” shows how all the areas of the Company growingly focus on safety. The first edition included around 350 events, 90 simulations in the field of safety, 50 training and information sessions, as well as 20 family days and meetings with contractors, schools and associations. Last year’s events - 994 in all - almost tripled compared with the first year, and now involve nearly 70 thousand people in 40 countries.

The 2010 edition is a new step along this path. The programme focuses on the “Integrated Nine Point Safety Improvement Plan” (http://www.enel.com/en-GB/sustainability/stakeholders/people/health_safety/), in which all Divisions and countries work jointly and coordinately towards the “Zero accidents” goal. Specifically, this year’s event  underlines three areas in which safety can operate: responsibility towards contractors and their right and duty to share Enel’s mission; “near misses”, that is, avoided accidents which can help future prevention; interaction between individual and collective responsibility in guaranteeing personal and group safety in the workplace.

The programme of events in the different countries is to be found, updated, in the International Safety Week website. Successfully launched in 2009, the event’s website aims to offer colleagues an increasing opportunity to share concerns, suggestions and considerations on safety, improving present efforts and developing or creating new projects for the close future.
