Sustainable mobility in Tuscany
Agreement between Enel and the City of Pisa for the creation of an
intelligent electric-recharging network, with 100 points scattered throughout
the city. The company will construct an advanced system designed to meet the
needs of motorists and make possible the development and use of electric
vehicles
The dream of the electric car in Italy takes shape in Pisa, as part of the
“E-mobility Italy” project, thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding signed
yesterday by the Mayor of Pisa, Marco Filippeschi, and by the Director of the
Engineering and Innovation Division of Enel, Livio Vido. An agreement that will
enable the city of Pisa to build an intelligent power recharge network: 100
points scattered throughout the city, most of which available to all citizens
in public places.
A valuable contribution to improving the quality of life in Pisa and to
ensure that the Tuscan city - already known as "Capital of Research" by
virtue of its tradition and of the presence of major university research
centres, including one by Enel, which see it invest 3,7% of its GDP in
research, the Italian record and twice the European average - can make another
useful contribution to abate air pollution and noise. Based on Enel’s
estimates, if at least 15% of cars circulating in the Province of Pisa were
electric, more than 35 thousand tons of CO2, the main greenhouse gas
responsible for climate change, would be saved every year, and there would also
be a strong abatement of pollutants.
Therefore, the city of Pisa has decided to promote solutions and systems for
sustainable mobility and, in particular, for electric mobility. An area which
offers the possibility of numerous applications at an urban level: private
mobility on two and four wheels, public transport, logistics and fleet
management.
Electric charge columns will be available for use in Pisa starting September
2010, after an appropriate location for Pisan motorists studied by Enel in
collaboration with Pisamo and with the technical departments of the
Municipality based on the urban characteristics of the city, on the needs of
users, on traffic flows of citizens, on mobility rules in force, on the
specificity of public transport.
"Pisa proves to be an avant-garde city, ready to experience what only a
few years ago seemed impossible. This initiative, together with those
undertaken in the field of sustainable energy and building, testify that Pisa
has started a new era characterized by an eco-sustainable development, which
will have the development of electric mobility as its basic objective”, said
Mayor Filippeschi.
"Thanks to the experimental phase" said Livio Vido "Enel will
construct a system capable of meeting the needs of motorists, making possible
the development and use of electric vehicles and the construction of
avant-garde charging infrastructures, which will be tested in the pilot
project. The system, designed to enable recharging of the vehicle both at home
(garage) and in a public context, with the utmost comfort and convenience for
users, is built on the innovative remotely managed electricity network, which,
unique in the World, has allowed Enel to install, in Italy, 32 million
electronic meters".
