The two-day conference held in Manila within the National Climate Change Consciousness Week (November 19th. To 25th.), is the first carbon neutral event in the Philippines,
An event can be made carbon neutral by offsetting the CO2 emissions with an equal amount of carbon dioxide through CO2 capture processes; planting trees that can absorb it in the same amount that is produced; purchasing carbon credits on the voluntary market.
As for the Manila meeting, the main activities of the National Climate Change Consciousness Week took place at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The organizing committee gathered all the data and the information regarding the consumptions involved in setting up the event, the participants and ’ transportation and electricity use during the two days of the conference.
This data was sent to Enel Trade for the calculation of the relevant carbon dioxide. The emissions will be subsequently neutralized through other projects developed within the Enel Group, so that they will be the same they were before the event.
Controlling CO2 emissions plays an essential role in defining the environmental strategies of the Enel Group. Compared with 1990, the Kyoto Protocol base year, specific CO2 emissions within the Enel Group have been cut by 37% (1990: 618 g/kwh).
In order to achieve the zero emission target, Enel has developed significant partnerships with major Italian and foreign research centres and universities, also working on drawing up the European programme Zero Emission Platform.
Furthermore, the Group plays a leading role at a global level in research activities regarding carbon capture and storage.
