Energy efficiency

Energy efficency

Since long, energy efficiency projects are a constant commitment within Enel’s activities. Indeed, the Company aims at a rational use of energy, by using the most innovative technologies and searching for the best solutions.

In order to achieve this aim, the Group has taken the following action:

  • Use of best existing technologies: progressively converting Enel’s production plants so as to achieve a generation mix (thermal, nuclear and renewable) that includes increasingly efficient technologies, EPR nuclear, innovative renewables, renewable energy storage).
  • Smart grids: as renewable generation extends to small and very small plants, the current electricity grid, conceived for uni-directional energy distribution, will have to become a smart grid. This network will be able to manage a massive amount of distributed energy,  especially from renewable sources, interact with advanced systems of final user management  and with electric car charging stations, and improve total network efficiency.
  • After-meter services: with the Enel Home project, aimed at developing added-value services for final users, to efficiently manage residential energy consumption.
  • Electric mobility: under the programme, an integrated mobility model is developed that will strongly promote the widespread use of electric vehicles, both for residential use and for businesses. This way, the efficiency of final energy use will be increate, thus truly helping to reduce emission reduction.
  • Behavioral changes: significant energy saving results can be achieved by spreading information to customers and employees. The Environmental Management Systems  improved the management of these initiatives.

Thanks to policies aimed at increasing plant efficiency total energy consumptionwas diminished by about 12,095 TJ (2,889 Tcal). These results have been achieved due to the simple thermal consumption  reduction of about – 4,206 Tcal (-38 kcal/kWh . 110,671 GWh) and a combined thermal consumption increase of about +1,317,000 Gcal (+29 kcal/kWheq . 45,401 GWh).

Furthermore, Enel and Endesa promote the responsible and efficient energy use  by offering a number of products: solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, air conditioning and heat pumps, radiators with devices allowing to rationalise consumption, condensation heaters, capacitor banks for power correction, life-saving switch that turn off automatically and voltage stabilisers.
