Emissions management

The emissions of certain substances are air polluting, while those of other substances cause climate change. As regards Enel’s industrial activities, the most typical ones are sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and particulates. While the most abundant emissions are carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and methane (CH4).

Specifically, in 2010 Enel’s activities produced the following emissions:

Enel commits to develop technologies that limit emissions, regarding which the Group has a long and remarkable experience. Specifically:

In 2010, about100 million tons of CO2 emissions were saved (more than 62 million tons from renewable sources and more than 37 from nuclear generation). The ratio between total CO2 emissions that were saved by renewable generation and those Enel’s electricity generation would have saved without the renewable share [saved CO2/actual CO2+saved CO2] was 35%. When including the emissions saved from nuclear generation, this ratio is more than 44%.
