Environmental report

The Annual Environmental Report, published by Enel since 1996, describes yearly initiatives and results achieved by the company's environmental policy, also comparing them with the previous 5 years.
In particular, it examines all activities held in the world like manufacturing, distribution and marketing activities concerning electricity, natural gas, mining and quarrying.
The document is therefore an opportunity to review the Company ‘s activities and it is a useful tool to achieve more ambitious and qualifying goals.
The methodology for the collection is based on principles and guidelines provided by the Enrico Mattei Foundation. Since 2007 the indications provided by GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) are taken into consideration. Technical definitions are taken from the publications of UNIPEDE (International Union of Manufacturers and Distributors of Electricity).

In 2010 five thermal power plants were certified (ISO 14001) in Spain and one in Morocco, as well as distribution activities in the city of Bucharest.

At present, 94 percent of electricity grids and 83 percent of the generation capacity have been certified at a global level. Moreover, in Italy real estate and other services, as well as commercial activities, have also been certified.

Renewable generation is growing and presently exceeds 30 percent of the total amount. With the contribution of nuclear power, in 2010 approximately 100 million tons of CO2 have been saved by means of carbon free generation.

Compared with 2009, CO2 emissions per generated kWh were reduced by more than 5 percent. Moreover, as regards thermal electricity generation, SO2 emissions were cut by 17 percent, NOX ones by18 percent and particulates.

The overall efficiency of thermal power plants has improved by almost 2 percent, water consumption has diminished by 2 percent, the wastewater recovery has increased by 50 percent and cable lines cover more than 60 percent of the grid.

Moreover, in 2010 the “carbon strategy” was launched, joining the professional abilities and know-how of Enel and Endesa.
In the field of innovation, a carbon capture and storage pilot plant was inaugurated at Brindisi.

As regards electric cars and the partnership with Daimler Mercedes, today approximately 700 smart electrical vehicles are driving in Italy and Spain. The installation of about 900 charging stations is planned in Rome, Pisa, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.
