Enel shows consideration towards the environment today for future generations. In order to protect the Earth, ensure competitiveness and develop environmental safeguard, while supplying customers with affordable and environmentally friendly energy, the Group invests in innovative research and in the best available technologies that allow greenhouse gas emission and pollutant agent reduction.
The Group is always gradually spreading and harmonizing the Environmental Management System certificates as prescribe by international standards. In 2010 three thermal plants in Spain and one in Morocco – as well as distribution activities in the city of Bucharest - have been certificated ISO 14001. At present, 94 percent of electric grids and 83 percent of generation capacity at a global level are certified, as are, in Italy, services including real estate and commercial activities.
Renewable production is growing, and now exceeds 30 percent of the total. Adding the nuclear share, in 2010 our “carbon free” generation allowed us to save 100 million tons of CO2, as if we had avoided the emissions of about 60 million cars.
Compared with 2009, for each kWh that it produced, Enel diminished CO2 emissions by more than 5 percent and, as regards thermal generation, SO2 emissions and particulates by 17 percent, NOx emissions by 18 percent.
Total efficiency of thermal plants improved by almost 2 percent, water consumption was lowered by 2 percent, the recovery index of waste water increased by 50 percent and cabled lines exceeded 60 percent of the grid.
In 2010 the Group’s “carbon strategy” was unified, sharing common skills and expertise of Enel and Endesa. In the field of innovation a carbon capture pilot plant was opened at Brindisi.
As regards electric cars and the partnership with Daimler Mercedes, today about 700 electric vehicles are on the roads of Italy and Spain, and about 900 charging stations are expected to be installed in Rome, Pisa, Milano, Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.
