To cope with the oil crisis triggered by the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur conflict, Enel plans, in 1973 to build both new nuclear power plants, to reduce dependence on oil, as well as hydroelectric pumping plants. In 1976 the Italian Parliament launches the first legislative action in the field of energy-saving policy. Enel prepares a leaflet entitled “For a better and more economical use of energy”, printing 21 million copies and sending it out to every household. |

The growing interest in environmental issues leads Enel to begin collaborating with associations for the defense of nature. An agreement is signed with the WWF for the creation and management of the Vulci natural oasis, which emerged around a hydroelectric flood on the Fiora river, between Lazio and Tuscany. |

Two demonstration plants fueled by renewable energy sources are inaugurated: the wind power plant in Upper Nurra (10 air motors, 50 kW each) and the PV power plant on the Vulcano island (with a PV array of approximately 2.000 modules and a peak power of 80 kW). |

In 1994 and 1995 new plants from renewable sources are opened: a 3 MW solar photovoltaic power plant, the largest in operation in the world, is completed in Serre Persano. In Upper Nurra the 1 MW Gamma 60 wind turbine is put into operation, whilst two wind power plants are installed in Frosolone and Collarmele. |

On March 28, 2002, the Enel Group drafts a Code of Ethics expressing the commitments and responsibilities in the conduct of business and corporate activities undertaken by employees of Enel, whether directors or employees. As of 2002 Enel incorporates Corporate Social Responsibility. |

2003: First Sustainability Report |

During the year the action plan promoted by Enel to support Corporate Social Responsibility continues. For the first year Enel publishes the Sustainability Report. Enel, which is already present in the FTSE4Good Global 100 (stock exchange index of the top 100 companies in the world by market capitalization that excel for their achievements and commitments in terms of sustainable economic development), is admitted, as of the September 22, to the prestigious list of FTSE4Good Europe 50, the index of the top 50 European companies that combine business with plans and principles of social and environmental sustainability. Enel is the only public utility to be admitted. In 2003, Enel also enters the Advanced Sustainable Performance Index, based on assessments made by Vigeo, a French classification society. |

In February 2004, Enel joins the UN Global Compact, a program of action promoted by the United Nations in the human rights, labor and environmental protection areas. In 2004, Enel is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World (DJSI). The prestigious global stock market index lists companies that have achieved excellence for having behaved in a responsible and sustainable way not only from an economic and financial point of view, but also in relation to respect for environment and society. Enel will be included in this index for six years in a row, 2010 included. |

First interactive Sustainability Report. Enel reinvents its Sustainability Report to make it even more accessible and interactive, in order to involve more actively its customers.
Alternative dispute procedure for small and medium enterprises (July 7) Enel, CNA, Confagricoltura, Confapi, Confartigianato Imprese, Confcommercio-Imprese per l'Italia, and Confesercenti sign an agreement to implement the alternative dispute resolution procedure. CSR online Awards (July 7) Enel is one of the world’s top ten companies in terms of online communication of corporate social responsibility. The ranking is drawn up by the Swedish firm Lundquist, which monitors the websites of 91 companies included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. GRI - International Organizational Stakeholder (November 25) Investigating the development of sustainability reporting and the most significant experiences of integrated reporting is the purpose of the Global Reporting Initiative’s Organizational Stakeholder Event, hosted for the first time in Italy by Enel. Group Nuclear Policy (December 21) The Board of Directors approves the Group Nuclear Policy, which gives absolute priority to safety and protection of workers, public and environment. |

The Enel Group joins the initiative created by the United Nations, bringing together the world’s top 56 companies on the issue of sustainability. The company is also the second utility in the world to have been admitted to the index run by the London Stock Exchange and the Financial Times, on the grounds of its compliance with a set of rigorous criteria relating to transparency and safety in its management of nuclear activities. |
