Greece
Enel has been active in Greece since 2006, owning 75% of Enelco S.A. The remaining 25% of Enelco belongs to PROMETHEUS GAS S.A..
Enelco develops, implements and commissions electricity production projects and, in this way, supports the economic growth of the region.
Thanks to Enel’s experience in the combined cycle plant production sector in Italy, Spain and Russia and access to natural gas sources via Prometheus Gas, it is able to play an important role in the electrical market in Greece and South Eastern Europe. Currently, ENELCO holds two licences for combined cycle plant at Viotia and Evros with a total capacity of 900 MW and intends to participate in all the tenders for the development of independent production stations in Greece.
In May 2007, Enel signed an agreement regarding the purchase of wind farms already operational or about to be developed, for an overall capacity of 127 MW. Thanks to this acquisition, Enel has become the world's third largest operator in the wind power market, with plants spanning the entire Greek territory. Expansion in the wind power sector continues to be Enel's main goal for that country.
