Slovakia

Slovakia is one of the most dynamic economies in Central Eastern Europe and its electric system is located in a strategic position in the heart of Europe: this makes an interesting hub for the production of electrical energy, which is well connected with the markets of Eastern and Western Europe.

In February 2005, Enel finalised the agreement to purchase 66% of electric company Slovenské elektrárne (SE), the first electrical energy producer in Slovakia and the second in Central Eastern Europe with a production capacity of around 6,500 MW. SE’s head office is in Bratislava, whilst the production facilities are located throughout the territory of the Slovak Republic.

SE’s plant is very well balanced: two nuclear power stations, two thermoelectric and thirty or so hydroelectric power stations. For the future, Enel has submitted an investment plan for around 2 billion euros (including the full functionment of EMO reactors 3 and 4, the optimisation of existing plants and investments in renewables), aimed at making its power stations more efficient and compatible with the environment.
