Enel runs operations in Spain in the generation, distribution and sale of electricity with Enel Viesgo, which has about 2,200 MW in installed capacity, and with Enel Union Fenosa Renovables, a company active in the wind and hydro power sector.
On 1 October 2007, Enel and partner Acciona successfully completed their Joint Tender Offer over Endesa. Enel and Acciona currently hold 92% of the share capital of Endesa (Enel 67%, Acciona 25%).
Endesa
Endesa is Spain’s largest electricity company and Ibero-America’s first private electricity company. It is a prominent electricity operator in the European Mediterranean area, especially in Italy, with activities in other European countries. Furthermore, it has maintained a growing presence in Spain's natural gas market, and achieved an important level of development in the renewable energy sector.
Endesa is a producer of electricity in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, France, and Portugal; a distributor of electricity in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Morocco; and a marketer of electricity and service provider in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Andorra, and other European wholesale markets.
At the end of 2006, the electricity companies controlled by Endesa had an overall installed capacity of 47,109 MW; with an annual generation of 186,411 GWh, and a total of 220,299 GWh of sales to more than 23 million clients.
Endesa is also present in Spain’s regulated and deregulated natural gas markets. In these markets, it sells natural gas to more than 670,000 clients altogether.
On the other hand, it participates in renewable source and co-generation facilities, which add up to an overall capacity of 2,220 MW, either active or under construction.

Enel Viesgo
Enel entered the Spanish market in 2002 with the purchase of Viesgo, which generates, distributes and sells electrical energy in free markets. Enel Viesgo’s share of the generation market is around 5% with an installed capacity of 2,427 MW (of which 900 are from renewable energy sources). The company owns waterworks as well as coal and gas power stations in the regions of Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castille La Mancha, Castille Leon and Catalonia and serves 640,000 customers with 29,500 km of electric grid located in Cantabria and partially in Asturias, Galicia and northern Castille Leon.
In 2006 Viesgo celebrated 100 years of trading. Spain was also the first foreign country in which the Telegestore project was completed with the installation of the electronic meter system in thousands of houses.

Enel Union Fenosa Renovables
Enel Unión Fenosa Renovables (EUFER), owned with equal shares by Enel and Unión Fenosa, is the Spanish company producing gas and electricity for 8.5 million customers in the world and manages 9,952 MW of power installed of which 27.4% is operated abroad.
Enel Unión Fenosa Renovables has a capacity installed (wind and hydroelectric energy) of 510 MW; furthermore, it plans to build plants to produce a further 400 MW.
The partnership with Unión Fenosa will allow Enel to realise significant projects in the area of renewable energy in Spain and Portugal. It is planned that the capacity of EUFER will amount to 1,600 MW by 2010. EUFER has recently obtained green certificates for its wind energy parks at Os Corvos, Coucepenido, Careón, Castelo, Peña Forcada, Do Vilan, Coriscada y Corzán (A Coruña), Peña Armada (Lugo) y Aldeavieja (Ávila). The certificates obtained affirm that these sites are managed in full compliance with the international Standard UNI EN ISO14001 using management systems, which are particularly environmentally friendly.
