Enel's mission
Environment, a plan for the future
When it comes to producing energy, vision is vital. It is a creative process which requires us to imagine the future in order to try to achieve our objectives. Enel needs to look into the distance and understand what the system of electrical energy generation and distribution will be like 20 years from now. Our company’s vision is that the world is respected and that, first of all, we need to change. To do this, increasing our commitment to protect the environment has become a new strategic objective and an integral part of our mission.
In December 2006, Enel launched a major investment project for research, innovation, renewable sources, education and environmental communication: the Environment Project. By being efficient, saving energy and using better technologies, we are convinced that we can make a contribution towards everyone having the energy he or she needs in the world, respecting the environment and reducing the risks of climate change. Enel has invested and continues to invest in the development and application of improved technologies for its plant - a commitment, which we have sought to strengthen as a result of this new environmental project, to make Enel the leading company in the world in terms of seeking innovative solutions for the production and distribution of electrical energy. This means developing our mission and renewed attention to air, water and soil quality by our employees and resources.
However, it is also an ambitious, realistic and rigorous plan with regard to timing and amount of the investments as well as the contribution to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to prevent climate change. We want to achieve increasingly high environmental and efficiency standards and to confirm our position as the renewable energy sources leader. Above all, we want to spread a culture of efficiency and energy saving to the new generations.
Over the next 5 years, our company will develop a major investment programme for more than 4 billion euros. A large part of this investment, approximately 3.3 billion euros, is intended to increase renewable sources, with 1,700 MW of added capacity. On top of this, approximately 800 million euros will be invested in new and highly innovative projects. The effect of this plan will be to prevent more than 4 million tonnes of CO2 a year, in addition to that already achieved by Enel: 16 million tonnes of CO2 less than in 2000, meaning a 20% reduction.
There are many reasons for the Environment Project. Above all, we believe that a leader in the energy sector must also be a technological and environmental leader. Therefore, we can use the experience we have gained in the efficiency and improvement of our processes to advantage, developing ideas and new projects, with the capacity which only we are able to put forward.
With Enel’s process of international growth already well under way, the Environment Project needs to be extended to other countries. Enel must maintain its leadership in the energy sector by activating applicable lines of research and new technology trends in every possible country. In this way, the Environment Project will include new facilities to utilise the resources in each country where Enel operates: wind in Romania, geothermal resources in Central and South America, hydroelectricity and wind in Spain, and so on.
We must entrust to future generations a better world than the one we have come into and a company, which has combined this improvement of the environmental situation with an increase in its own results. Because based on this substantial commitment, Enel can take the opportunity to grow its business: focusing on the environment and facilitating production of electrical energy that customers can use with almost no environmental impact will certainly become a determining factor in beating the competition and offering the world the possibility of compatible development.
