Energy saving

The most effective way of reducing consumption of primary energy, and thus of safeguarding the environment, is more efficient energy production, and, above all, by the aware and informed use of energy by consumers.
We are indeed convinced that in the immediate future, energy efficiency may be considered to be the most important “renewable energy source” we have, since efficiency alone could reduce atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide by 20-30%.

With the publication of the “Green Paper on energy efficiency” (June 2005), Europe, too, has emphasised the need to go down this road, both for environmental reasons and to increase energy security. In particular, as well as diversifying primary sources of energy, the European Union wants:
action on the demand side, to achieve energy savings by rationalising its use higher yields from generating equipment.
These are shared and environmentally friendly proposals that involve rationalising costs and reducing the impact on society.

Enel’s industrial strategy, launched several years ago, and further strengthened in recent months, is in harmony with the ideas of the EU, and is focussed on promoting any possible operation that has high environmental compatibility.

In particular, in the last two years Enel has developed a comprehensive information campaign on the intelligent use of electricity, with hundreds of advertisements in the media, millions of copies of the “Quando usi l’energia, usa la testa” (“When you use energy, use your head”) guide distributed to households, and hundreds of thousands of people – particularly young people between the ages of 6 to 18 – involved in specific entertainment, cultural and informational events.

We have distributed 7 million high efficiency fluorescent lamps and over 1 million water economy units free of charge to householders and local government offices.
We offer our customers the possibility of purchasing more efficient domestic appliances, with a 10% discount, and we are also developing agreements with major retailers for the joint development of advertising and promotions to motivate and reward the most “virtuous” consumers.
From early 2007, Enel’s network of shops will run promotion to supply high efficiency gas boilers and air conditioners, and solar heating systems, which use the energy of the sun to produce hot water. And we are working hard to offer our customers solutions that are truly innovative, such as the display panel that can be combined with our new electronic meters, and “intelligent” appliances with automatic control and management systems.

Through Enel Sole, which operates in the field of public lighting, we are pursuing an ambitious project to make street and monument lighting more efficient, and are working with ANCI, the Italian local government association, to promote and support an energy efficiency culture in local government.

Finally, we have achieved very satisfactory results in increasing the energy yield of our power stations, and in our electricity and gas distribution systems, which have won awards from the Italian electrical and gas energy authority.

We have made a significant commitment, which we started and intend to continue because we are aware that we are working to improve not only the energy security of Italy, but also the environment in which we live.

In other words: for sustainable development and a better world.
