Clean energy beyond renewables

Clean energy beyond renewables

Every human construction, whether it's a small house or a large industrial facility, alters the environment in which it was built, regardless of its use.

Sustainable since the laying of its foundations

Every human construction, whether it's a small house or a large industrial facility, alters the environment in which it was built, regardless of its use. Electricity generation plants from renewable sources also abide to this rule.

Our 'sustainable worksite' model not only turns renewables into the best answer to the urgent need of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but is also the most sustainable way to build new electricity generation plants.

We are aware of the extent to which plant construction design and plan is decisive. Their sustainability should not be limited to the clean energy they generate but should also include the full sustainability of the areas where they are built.

“Our renewable plants generate clean energy. Their greater environmental impact is during the construction phase, hence we have focused on creating and implementing an environmental worksite”

Antonella Santilli, Enel Green Power Head of Sustainability

Care for the slightest detaily

Thanks to years of experience in plant construction and refurbishing, today we are able to connect environmental protection, the rational use of resources, attention towards the health of workers and local population, the safeguard of flora and fauna in a single operational model.

After the first pilot projects launched in Italy, we have started to successfully extend this model to all the countries in which we are present and build plants.

The air, water, and land receive care and attention up to the slightest detail throughout all activities carried out at the worksite, forming a real guide of good practices to be applied.

At our 'sustainable worksites' we build plants running on renewable sources to power worksite activities and offset the CO2 emitted by vehicles and combustion-run equipment. We use environmentally friendly paint and flooring, biodegradable machine oils, recyclable materials, systems for concrete washing and recycling, vegetable abrasives for sanding and low-carbon or short chain delivery products.

“The sustainable worksite combines biodiversity protection, rational use of resources, attention towards the health of workers and the local population, protecting the flora and fauna”

Biodiversity protection

We have achieved 129 biodiversity protection projects in the areas where our plants have been built, with a related investment of 21 million euros in completed and ongoing initiatives in Europe, Latin America, United States and Russia.

The safeguard of biodiversity is one of our strategic objectives and we have drawn up a specific policy to this regard, which involves all our electricity generation, transmission and distribution activities.

The guidelines we have defined globally are set to make a contribution to the United Nations Biological Diversity goals, in compliance with the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and the related 20 goals shared by the international community and enforced in 2014.
