Slovenské elektrárne was recently handed the VIA BONA Slovakia 2013 award by newly-elected Slovakian President Andrej Kiska, with the prize coming in the main category Responsible Large Corporation of 2013 for its CSR programme Energy for the Country.

The Enel Group subsidiary won the award thanks to its long-term commitment to CSR through a programme which the Company has been carrying out since 2008. The programme covers five areas of CSR – philanthropy, protection of the environment, education, culture and sport – and complements Slovenské Elektrárne's everyday operations and its long-term business development plan.

This is the first time that Slovenské Elektrárne has received this particular award but the second consecutive year in which the company was awarded by VIA BONA, after having been handed the Long-Term Positive Influence on Community award in for its project St. Vincent De Paul homeless shelter in Bratislava in the 2012 edition.

This initiative is synonymous of CSR for Slovenské Elektrárne, which since 2008 has been carrying out philanthropic activities divided into five areas: Energy for Life works on charity and philanthropic activities; Energy for Nature on protection of the environment and preservation of biodiversity; Energy for Education on support and development of education; Energy for Culture on development and protection of cultural values; and Energy for Sport on prevention of illnesses, healthcare and the promotion of sport.

As part of the Energy for the Country programme the business works with a number of selected people and institutions for the conceptual development and support of projects regionally and nationwide.

Slovenské Elektrárne was nominated for the main award not only for the financial and non-financial support it provides to corporate philanthropy projects, but also for its commitment to the minimisation of negative impacts on the environment, care services to employees, offering a positive influence on local communities and attention to employees safety. Slovenske Elektrarne is also one of founding members of the Fund for Transparent Slovakia.

Slovenské Elektrárne's philanthropic projects are addressed to challenging topics that are not commonly at the centre of corporate social responsibility programmes, but that are necessary for the improvement of social and community conditions.
