Endesa, Technology at the Service of the Environment

Calculating the environmental “footprint” of an activity and working to reduce its impact is key to operating in a responsible and sustainable way. The Enel Group has always been committed to sustainability, oftentimes preceding environmental legislations.


Endesa has developed an innovative tool able to perform both a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental “pressure” of its activities. As previously occurred with the carbon footprint, Enel company has outpaced regulations in the sector, thereby helping the management of all businesses from an environmental standpoint.
The most important existing international benchmarks were used to create the tool, including the recent guidelines developed by the European Union to calculate the environmental footprint of organisations and products. The tool applications includes all of Endesa's activities:  generation, distribution, mine and port terminal management, activities in stores and offices located in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.


The methodological approach adopted for the calculation of environmental impact is based on life cycle analysis, allowing for the quantification of both direct and indirect environmental impact generated by Endesa's activities.

The new indicator allows for the integration of environmental components into the business strategy, such as atmospheric, hydro, resource consumption, waste, noise, flora and fauna sub-footprints. Endesa already holds a Carbon Footprint certification issued by the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) and has begun to work in the water management field.

The Enel Group company's objectives for this tool are to optimise processes, to analyse evolution in environmental performance and to compare the various fields of business and technology under the same criteria, in order to evaluate all environmental risks and work to prevent them
