Rome, October 20, 2003 – Enel wins twice at the “Environmentally Friendly Innovation” awards. These important prizes were assigned by environmentalist association Legambiente and the regional government of Lombardy, in collaboration with the Milan Politecnico and the Luigi Bocconi University for two technology research projects.

With the Marmettola project, the Eugenio Montale power plant of La Spezia employs the residues from marble production in its desulphurization systems. The benefits include a high level of sulfurous emission reduction and the elimination of discharges, as well as the reduction of water consumption and the transportation of dusty materials with marked savings of energy, scale, fuel oil and water.

From February 2002, with the AMIS project (Mercury and Hydrogen Sulfate Abatement), in Bagnore, the township of Santa Fiora in the province of Grossetto, Enel has eliminated the annoying odors that come with the hydrogen sulfate emissions which are typical in areas of geothermal energy production, improving air quality and enhancing the plant’s territorial integration.

These “Environmentally Friendly Innovation” awards are a confirmation of Enel’s commitment to environmental excellence, and to research and experimentation in green energy.

Enel is, in fact, the world leader in the production of energy from renewable sources with around 700 hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, photovoltaic and biomass plants in Italy, Spain, North America and Latin America for a total installed capacity of 16,000 MW. Enel’s energy production from renewable sources is enough to supply over 13 million families and contributes to sustainable development by averting the release of over 24 million tons of carbon gases into the atmosphere as a consequence of the elimination of about 8 million tons of oil consumption.

On November 18, 2002, Enel was nominated the Renewable Energy Company of the year at the the Business Week/Platts Global Energy Award, one of the most sought after awards in the sector.
