- This additional supply, which will arrive in Italy in 2008 following the enhancement of the Transmed pipeline, will consolidate the relationship with Sonatrach as the company already supplies Enel with 6 billion cubic metres of gas.
- Starting from 2011 Enel will receive a further 2 billion cubic metres of gas from the Algerian company through the Algeria-Sardinia-Tuscany gas pipeline
Rome, 14 February 2007 - Enel will increase its current gas imports from Algeria by 1 billion cubic metres a year thanks to a new long-term supply agreement with Sonatrach, the Algerian company for the production, transport and sale of hydrocarbons.
The new supplies will begin as soon as the final stage of the upgrade of the Algeria Tunisia Italy pipeline (Transmed) is completed in October 2008.
Today, Enel is Sonatrachs leading electricity utility customer: the company directly imports 6 billion cubic metres of gas a year from Algeria through the Transmed pipeline. Supply began in 1997 with 4 billion cubic metres a year, subsequently increased to 6 billion in 2002.
Enel CEO Fulvio Conti commented: The agreement is an important step in Enels strategy to grow in the gas sector and consolidates our partnership with Sonatrach. Enel and Sonatrach are also working together to develop the GALSI gas pipeline, a strategic infrastructure for the country, which will link Italy directly with Algeria through Sardinia.
Recently, Enel signed an agreement with Sonatrach to import 2 billion cubic metres of gas a year through the GALSI pipeline, which is expected to enter service by the end of 2011.
