Enel CEO and General Manager Fulvio Conti and WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran sign a framework agreement to cooperate in the fight against world hunger and climate change;
Expected total investment of up to 8 million euros in "green kitchens”, roof-top photovoltaic systems for WFP’s network of humanitarian rapid response bases and support to the agency’s humanitarian operations.

Rome, June 16th 2011 – Fulvio Conti, CEO and General Manager of Enel, and Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN agency that handles food aid as well as the logistics of humanitarian emergencies, signed a framework agreement in Rome to cooperate in the combat against world hunger and climate change.

The framework agreement signed today will be divided into three specific agreements involving two companies and the Group's non-profit organization; all of them will provide the WFP with their respective expertise. Once finalized, they will envisage investments for approximately 5 to 8 million euros.

1) Enel Trade will support the production and distribution of high efficiency kitchen stoves in the LDCs (Least Developed Countries). These "green kitchens" significantly reduce the use of biomass, which is a major cause of deforestation and places women collecting firewood at risk of violence. The details of the initiative are in the process of being defined. Enel Trade will also provide its expertise in the field of Clean Development Mechanisms, the Kyoto Protocol instruments for protecting the environment. Enel Trade and WFP will carry out the feasibility study and develop the business model needed to generate credits for reducing CO2 emissions.

2) Enel Green Power is assessing the installation of photovoltaic systems at the WFP’s logistical offices to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The offices being considered for this feasibility study are those in Brindisi (one at the military airport “Pierozzi” and the other in San Vito dei Normanni), Panama City (Panama), Dubai (UAE) and Accra (Ghana).

3) Enel Cuore, the Enel Group's non-profit organization, will select one or more humanitarian initiatives promoted by the WFP, which in keeping with its mission will focus on investments in infrastructural and structural assets or equipment in countries where the Enel Group operates. The first countries to be considered are Peru, Colombia and Guatemala.
