Fortune Global 500 has announced that the Enel Group is once again one of the world's largest companies for revenue in its 2014 index of the top 500 corporations worldwide based on total company revenue. The list was compiled by the renowned American business magazine Fortune.
Originally only containing non-U.S. companies, while the Fortune 500 index exclusively ranked U.S. corporations, Fortune Global 500 was created in 1990 in order to provide an overview of the global business world, and since 1995 it has included financial corporations and service providers.
In 2005, over 90 percent of the world's leading companies had their headquarters in Europe, the U.S. or Japan, but the situation is changing. The ranking's number one company is American retail giant Walmart, and the U.S. does continue to dominate the list with 128 companies reporting a combined revenue of $8.6trillion. However, the ranking has a lower number of American companies compared to the last year's edition, while China boasts six firms, of which two – Sinopec and China National Petroleum – are among the top four.
Having generated $106billion in revenue and approximately $4.3billion in profits in 2014, the Enel Group, which has more than 71,000 employees, ranked 56th in the overall standings. It is the fourth highest-placed Italian business and is higher in the table than companies of the calibre of Siemens, BMW and Procter & Gamble – confirming the strength and prestige of the multinational corporation led by Francesco Starace.
