Fulvio Conti: “We are proud to be part of one of the United Nation’s unique, global initiatives. We need a new community of businesses based on ethical values, transparent behaviour, responsibility and respect for individuals and the environment.”

Davos, January 28th, 2011 – Enel and Endesa enter the Global Compact LEAD, the initiative created by the United Nation Global Compact and presented today at Davos, bringing together the world’s top 54 companies, providing a benchmark for economic, social and environmental sustainability.

“We are proud to be part of a unique initiative like the United Nation Global Compact LEAD and to represent worldwide excellence when it comes to the issue of corporate social responsibility” stated Enel CEO Fulvio Conti. “Enel, together with Endesa, is now a fundamental global Group that contributes to the economic and social development of the countries in which it operates, exporting its ethical principles and best practices as well as implementing new initiatives relating to sustainability. This is the duty of multinationals today, to act and move forward responsibly, as world citizens, working closely with national and supranational institutions. In a world that is changing at an ever-increasing pace, and not without a certain level of chaos, we need a new community of businesses based on ethical values, transparent behaviour and respect for individuals and the environment.”

Enel is one of the 54 businesses from around the world to be included in the Global Compact LEAD: 54 companies providing a benchmark to promote sustainability, acknowledged to be the balance between social, economic and environmental responsibility and which is committed to achieving the “Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership”, 50 clearly defined practical actions to integrate sustainability into business models.

The “Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership” was introduced on the tenth anniversary of the United Nation Global Compact, a network of businesses, associations, governmental and non-governmental organisations who are committed to 10 principles relating to human rights, employment, the environment and corruption.

Enel signed up to the Global Compact in 2004, its subsidiary Endesa having joined in 2002. Comprised of companies in the energy industry, the Group strives to generate and circulate values that benefit customers, investors and stakeholders as well as communities. This involves respecting the environment and the safety of individuals, with a particular focus on developing renewable energy and making advanced technological solutions to guarantee a better world for future generations.

Since 2002, the Enel Group has published an annual Sustainability Report, and works tirelessly to maintain close links with stakeholders and spread the idea of sustainability as a matter of corporate social responsibility. This is supported by the Sustainability Day, an annual event that brings together some of the most influential international experts from the business world and public institutions to discuss corporate responsibility.

Sustainability Day 2011 will be taking place in Madrid at Endesa’s headquarters on  February 15th.
