ENEL S.P.A. SIGNS AN AGREEMENT WITH THE ITALIAN INTERIOR MINISTRY, PUBLIC SECURITY DEPARTMENT, FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE POWER MARKET INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

Italy’s Postal and Communications Police, working together with Enel, will develop an action plan to prevent cyber attacks.

Rome, February 28th, 2012 – The Head of the Police Force, Director General of Public Security, Prefect Antonio Manganelli and Enel Group CEO and General Manager, Fulvio Conti, have signed an agreement today at the Interior Ministry’s Department of Public Security aimed at improving measures to prevent and combat IT crime adversely affecting the critical information systems of Italy’s power market.

The bipartite agreement, due to run for three years, was drawn up in order to implement the decree issued by the Interior Ministry on January 9th, 2008 which identified the critical national IT infrastructure, defined as those public or private entities which manage the nerve centres that are essential for the proper functioning of the country’s ICT and remote systems.

The goal of the agreement signed today is the development of cooperative procedures, designed to prevent and combat hacking attacks perpetrated by criminal and terrorist organisations, targeting the electricity market information management and industrial automation systems, and will thus contribute to improving the efficiency of the national system in the power sector.

From an operational standpoint, the goal will also be achieved with the aid of a dedicated link between Enel and the CNAIPIC (the Italian National Anti-Cybercrime Centre for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure) control room, run by the Postal and Communications Police.

This agreement will therefore reinforce the central role played by Italy’s State Police and, in particular, the Post and Communications Police, in the complex business of protecting Italy’s critical Information infrastructure.
