ENEL INAUGURATES WIND FARM IN ALTA NURRA (SASSARI)

It is the first plant in Italy with large scale aero-generators: seven towers of 1,750 kW each, 67 metres in height with rotors of 66 metres in diameter. It will produce enough energy to meet the needs of 12,500 families.
Alta Nurra (Sassari), November 25, 2002 – Enel GreenPower, the world leader in the production of renewable energy, today inaugurated a wind farm in Alta Nurra for the commercial production of electrical energy. The wind farm, located at Fiume Santo, is the first in Italy where large scale generators have been installed. It consists of seven 1,750 kW aero-generators - of the Vestas V66 3-pole type – supported by 67 metre towers and with a rotor diameter of 66 metres. The aero-generator can produce electrical energy with wind velocities of between 4 and 25 metres per second. Over a year, the plant can generate up to 22 million kWh, equal to the domestic consumption of about 12,500 families. The plant at Alta Nurra, located in Sassari province in Sardinia’s north west, is where, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Enel carried out testing with prototype aero-generators built in Italy. The area where the plant is located is largely flat and at an altitude of about 30-40 metres above sea level. There is no cultivation of the land which, left in its original state, is used for sheep grazing. The area’s good wind potential, proven over many years of testing, the accessibility of the site and experience garnered during testing led to the implementation of large machines. Work began in January, 2002, and was concluded last September. Upon completion, including a start-up and running-in phase, the energy produced will be transferred to the “Nurra” primary substation via medium voltage underground cables. The site of the wind farm will also include a permanent exhibition on the history of renewable energy open to students and all who are interested in themes relating to this form of energy production. Through this initiative, Enel GreenPower aims to highlight the development of renewable energy in Sardinia. The company’s plans call for substantial investment which will reap important results both in terms of environmental benefits and in the island’s greater energy autonomy. The inauguration of the wind farm at Alta Nurra is concrete proof of this commitment. Enel GreenPower, a world leader in the production of energy from renewable sources, with headquarters in Italy, is also active in the United States, Canada and Latin America through its unit CHI Energy Inc. and Energia Global International (EGI). This group of companies manages over 400 plants, with a total capacity of over 2,600 MW. Enel GreenPower currently counts 12 wind farms with a total capacity of 150 MW. This will continue to grow both in Italy and abroad through the development of new projects and the strengthening of existing plants. In Italy, it manages 300 power plants with an installed capacity of more than 2,100 MW, using exclusively geothermal, mini-hydro, wind and photovoltaic sources. Last week in New York, Enel GreenPower was nominated “Renewable Energy Company of the Year” at the Global Energy Awards, one of the most sought after awards in the energy sector; tangible proof of Enel’s technological leadership and environmental excellence.
