ENEL AND ABENGOA SELECTED BY PEMEX TO DEVELOP A CO-GENERATION PLANT IN MEXICO

The power plant will be located in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico and will support the Mexican government in reaching its energy efficiency targets

Rome/Madrid/Mexico City, May 12th, 2015 – Enel, the multinational Group active in the power and gas sectors across Europe, the Americas, and Africa, has been selected by Mexican oil and gas company Pemex to develop a 517 MW power and 850 tons/hour steam co-generation plant in the area of Salina Cruz, in Mexico’s Oaxaca state, in partnership with Abengoa, an international company that works on innovative technological solutions aimed at sustainable energy development.

The facility will be constructed at the site of the Antonio Dovalí Jaime refinery owned by Pemex Refinación, which is a subsidiary of state-owned Pemex.

The co-generation plant to be built by Enel, Abengoa and PMX Cogeneración (an affiliate company indirectly owned by Pemex), will provide the Pemex refinery with part of the electricity and steam produced by the new plant, while the remaining electricity generated will be sold on the market.
The cogeneration process simultaneously produces electricity and thermal power from a single fuel source, such as natural gas, using the heat that would otherwise be lost. This improves its thermal efficiency or results in higher heat values, as well as significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Thanks to the contributions of PMX Cogeneración, Enel and Abengoa, the project will be developed with the aim of realizing a competitive, reliable and sustainable power plant, helping the Mexican government to achieve its target of reducing by around 50 per cent its greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050.

Moreover the construction, operation and maintenance of the plant will be a catalyst for regional socio-economic development through direct and indirect job creation while also generating a network of services that will help economic growth in the area.

The Enel Group is currently present in Mexico through its subsidiary Enel Green Power (EGP), a company devoted to the development and operation of renewable energy power plants. With this project, the Group will broaden its presence in the country to include also conventional generation.
