ENEL: 2012 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT CONFIRMS GROUP TOPS IN TRANSPARENCY AND ACCURACY

For the seventh year in a row, the Enel Group’s CSR reporting was ranked “A+”, the highest Application Level of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines by GRI itself;
Enel’s 2012 Sustainability Report also qualifies as “GC Advanced” Communication on Progress on the UN Global Compact’s issue areas.

Rome, August 9th, 2013 – Enel’s 2012 Sustainability Report prepared according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines, was ranked “A+”, the highest Application Level of such guidelines, by GRI itself. For the seventh year in a row, the award recognizes Enel’s commitment to transparent and accurate reporting of corporate responsibility in line with GRI guidelines. In addition, for the first time this year, Enel based its 2012 Sustainability Report on materiality analysis, placing it at the forefront of the latest trend in sustainability reporting. This method makes it possible to evaluate how the company’s strategic positioning aligns with stakeholder expectations in regard to sustainability issues.

In addition, Enel’s Sustainability Report fulfils its commitment to communicate its progress annually in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.  As such, Enel declared that its Communication on Progress went beyond the  standard requirements for transparency and disclosure at the “GC Advanced” level.

Now in its tenth year, this year’s Sustainability Report is around 100 pages shorter than its versions from the previous years, but has sacrificed none of the content. Instead, the information is arranged in a more streamlined format, as developed on the basis of an analysis of materiality, which make it possible to assess Enel’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its business practices, consistent with GRI guidelines, accountability principles and UN Global Compact guidelines.

The GRI, in particular, is the most accredited standard for economic, environmental and social sustainability adopted by leading companies throughout the world. Enel first adopted the GRI-G3 guidelines back in 2006 while drawing up its Sustainability Report in preparation for its admission to the associated indices. The GRI-G3 is a network of thousands of experts who have developed the most advanced and strictest sustainability reporting standards in the world. In addition to following the EUSS (Electric Utilities Sector Supplement) indicators, which allow to capture the unique features of the electricity business, Enel reports on its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in accordance with G3.1 guidelines.

Finally, Enel, along with Alcoa, General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Natura Cosmeticos and Shell, has supported the GRI in developing the last generation of the sustainability reporting guidelines (G4), which were presented last May in Amsterdam during the Global Conference on Sustainability Reporting.
