ENEL AND THE TOWN OF PORTOSCUSO AGREE TO DEVELOP RENEWABLE RESOURCES

A 90 MW wind plant will be developed in the town’s industrial zone

Rome, 15 October 2008 – Enel and the Town of Portoscuso, in Sardinia, today signed a Programme Agreement for the implementation of new industrial initiatives designed to foster the economic development of the area, with a special focus on renewable energy resources.

The primary initiative envisaged under the accord is the construction of a wind plant with a total capacity of about 90 MW in the town’s industrial zone. The facility will comprise 30 wind turbines with a capacity of 2.3 MW each, which will be supplied to Enel by Siemens.

Today’s agreement is founded on Enel’s long-standing presence in the town, where it has generation plants, and the desire of the Town of Portoscuso to preserve existing industrial activities and, at the same time, promote new activities to encourage new investment in electricity generation from renewable resources, thereby boosting local employment.

Enel is committed to acting as the Town of Portoscuso’s main partner in the energy field, undertaking initiatives in the renewables field with an emphasis on developing the area’s wind power potential. The goal is to generate strong, sustainable economic growth in the energy field within the town’s territory. The Sardinian town will therefore consider Enel as a partner in the energy field for its activities.

As regards the development of the wind plant, Enel will train experts in the maintenance and operation of the wind turbines and will involve the local business community in the project, helping to foster economic growth in the area. Enel will also promote the use of renewable energy through the installation of photovoltaic and thermal solar plants on municipal buildings.

This agreement forms part of Enel’s broader commitment to developing renewable energy resources, which less than a month ago led to the creation of the Renewable Energy Division, which incorporates all the Group’s activities in the wind, solar, geothermal and mini-hydro field in Italy and abroad, with a total installed capacity of about 4,300 MW.

The Division was created to leverage Enel’s operations in the renewables sector and to develop Enel’s presence in this field, with the objective of doubling total installed capacity in the next five years.
