ROOF-TOP PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM FOR THE MARCEGAGLIA GROUP COMPLETED IN TARANTO

The architecturally-integrated PV system of more than 3 MW, using innovative thin-film technology, has been inaugurated today. It is the result of an agreement between the industrial group and Enel Green Power.

Rome, February 16th, 2011 – Enel Green Power and the Marcegaglia group are launching today a 3+ MW photovoltaic system that is integrated into the roofs of Marcegaglia’s industrial buildings in Taranto. This project is the result of an agreement signed last year between Enel Green Power, a world leader in the production and management of renewable energy installations, and the Marcegaglia group, a global leader in the steel processing industry that is also active in the generation of energy from renewable sources.

The project, among the largest roof-based projects using innovative technology at a national level, is completely integrated into the structure of the building and uses innovative flexible thin-film amorphous silicon photovoltaic modules.

Once fully operational, the plant - owned by Enel Green Power (51%) and Marcegaglia (49%) - will generate over 3.7 million kilowatt hours annually, enough to meet the needs of some 1,400 households and avoiding the emission of over 1,900 metric tons of CO2 per year.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company dedicated to the development and management of power generation from renewable sources at the international level, in Europe and the Americas. It is an industry-leader worldwide thanks to nearly 22 billion kilowatt hours generated from water, sun, wind and geothermal, and can meet the needs of more than 8 million households each year, avoiding the emission of over 16 million tons of carbon dioxide. The installed capacity is over 6,100 MW. The operating plants are over 600 around the world and the generation mix includes wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and biomass.

The Marcegaglia group, entirely controlled by the Marcegaglia family, has its core business in steel processing. With 7,500 employees and 50 factories in Italy, Europe, the Americas and Asia, it operates in markets all around the world.
As part of its diversified activities, Marcegaglia Energy is the business unit dedicated to the production of energy from renewable sources. With the Euro Energy Group, it has been active since 1995 in generating electricity from biomass and RDF (refuse derived fuel). Since 2006 it has been using technologies for the production of photovoltaic energy: with Arendi, a company dedicated to thin-film technology with glass substrate, and with Marcegaglia Buildtech (flexible thin film).
