PHOTOVOLTAIC PLAT IN STRAMBINO, PIEDMONT, ENTERS SERVICE

The joint venture between Enel Green Power and Finpiemonte Partecipazioni has connected the 2.5 MW photovoltaic plant to the grid. The plant can meet the power needs of 1,100 households
The plant was inaugurated today by the Chairman of Finpiemonte Partecipazioni, Paolo Marchioni, by Roberto Deambrogio, Head of Italy and Europe at Enel Green Power, and by the Mayor of Strambino, Savino Beiletti.

Rome-Turin, May 20th, 2011 – The Strambino photovoltaic plant has entered service. The plant is the fruit of an agreement signed earlier this year between Enel Green Power and Finpiemonte Partecipazioni for the development of renewables in Piedmont.

The plant was inaugurated today by Paolo Marchioni, Chairman of Finpiemonte Partecipazioni, the Mayor of Strambino Savino Beiletti, and by Roberto Deambrogio, Head of Italy and Europe at Enel Green Power.

The photovoltaic plant, composed of polycrystalline silicon solar panels, has an installed capacity of 2.5 MW and will generate about 3 million kWh a year, enough to meet the power needs of 1,100 households and avoid the emission of 2,000 tonnes of CO2.

The plant was built by the new company Enel Green Power Strambino Solar, of which 60% is held by Enel Green Power – the Enel Group company dedicated to the development and management of renewable sources in Italy and around the world – and 40% by Finpiemonte Partecipazioni – a company controlled by the Region of Piedmont that operates in the fields of renewables and atmospheric emission reduction – which has access to over 600,000 square meters of space at the companies in which it has invested to develop further joint initiatives for the implementation of photovoltaic systems.

"We are very pleased", remarked the Chairman of Finpiemonte Partecipazioni, Paolo Marchioni, "to have been able to bring the plant on line so quickly, in a project representing a best practice in this field: in addition to the environmental data mentioned, the initiative has had a positive impact on local employment as well as generating economic benefits through the investment in photovoltaics, thus leveraging the area’s business potential. We will be working again alongside Enel Green Power to develop substantial new synergies, in photovoltaics but also in other segments of the highly variegated field of renewable energy".

"We are pleased to start up this photovoltaic plant today, which increases our zero-emission generation capacity in Piedmont, a region in which we are already present with hydro plants that we are currently refurbishing", stated Roberto Deambrogio, Head of Italy and Europe at Enel Green Power. "We believe in distributed generation, especially in a country like Italy, which has a major supply of this resource, and we plan to continue working with our partner, Finpiemonte, to identify new opportunities for development in this region, that will thus benefit from both an environmental and a power supplies’ security standpoint ".

"The construction of this facility", added Massimo Giordano, Regional Councillor for Economic Development, Innovation and Energy of the Region of Piedmont, "is an example of sound policy for renewables, where we want above all to encourage the use of integrated photovoltaics. Our regional planning in this field, based on national guidelines, takes into account the needs of local areas while avoiding the uncontrolled development of ground-based systems that can ruin the landscape and occupy agricultural land. We are continuing our policy of pursuing advanced innovation projects, which bring together the use of renewable sources, energy savings and practical application of innovative materials".

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company dedicated to the development and management of power generation from renewable sources in Italy and around the world. It is the world leader in the sector, generating about 22 billion kWh of power from water, sun, wind and geothermal resources, enough to meet the needs of some 8 million households and avoid about 16 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The company has an installed capacity of over 6,100 MW, with over 620 facilities around the world and a generation mix that includes wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and biomass.

Finpiemonte Partecipazioni is a public-private corporation, with the Region of Piedmont its majority shareholder. It operates in the fields of logistics, renewable energy and the development of Piedmont. More specifically, the activity of Finpiemonte Partecipazioni in the renewable energy sector is focused on reducing atmospheric emissions through the development of photovoltaics, biogas cogeneration, district heating and hydro power.
