The new project will add further 114 MW to the 490 MW of wind capacity Enel Green Power already obtained in previous Brazilian public auctions since 2010
Construction of the new project requires an overall investment of approximately 250 million US dollars
Rome Rio de Janeiro, December 1st 2014 Following the A-5 Brazilian public auction, Enel Green Power has been awarded the right to sign 20-year power supply contracts with a pool of Brazilian electricity distribution companies with power produced by a new 114 MW wind project.
The wind farm, Morro do Chapéu, will be constructed in Bahia State, in north-eastern Brazil, where the company already manages approximately 400 MW of wind projects in operation or under construction and over 254 MW of photovoltaic projects awarded within the last Leilão de Reserva public tender.
Morro do Chapéu, with a total installed capacity of 114 MW and an average load factor of more than 50%, equivalent to approximately 4,500 hours of energy production per year, will be able to generate over 500 GWh per year, avoiding the annual emission of over 150,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
"We are very pleased with this brilliant result that follows after less than a month the award of other 344 MW of wind and photovoltaic capacity obtained in the previous Brazilian public tender - stated Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel Green Power. "Specifically, this new project will add further 114 MW to 490 MW of wind capacity that Enel Green Power has already won in Brazil in previous public tenders since 2010, another step forward in our growth strategy in Latin America."
The Morro do Chapéu project will require a total investment of around 250 million US dollars to build. With its power production, the plant will help meet Brazils increasing energy demand, which is estimated to grow at an average annual rate of 4% by 2020.
Brazil is among the world leaders in renewable energy generation thanks to its more than 98,000 MW of installed renewable capacity, corresponding to around 85% of the countrys total installed capacity.
Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company fully dedicated to the development and management of renewable energy sources at the international level, with operations in Europe, the Americas and Africa. The company generated over 29 billion kWh in 2013 from water, sun, wind and the Earths heat - enough to meet the energy needs of more than 10 million households and avoid the emission of approximately 16 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Enel Green Power is a world leader in the sector thanks to its well-balanced generation mix, providing generation volumes well over the sector average. As of September 30th, 2014, the company has an installed capacity of approximately 9,500 MW from a mix of sources including wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass. The company has about 750 plants operating in 18 countries in Europe, the Americas and Africa.
