TISCALI AND ENEL OPEN FIBER BRING FIBER TO THE HOME ULTRA-BROADBAND INNOVATION TO CAGLIARI

Thanks to the partnership with Enel Open Fiber, Tiscali’s customers in the Sardinian capital will be able to access the grid at up to 1 Gigabit per second

Cagliari, October 24th, 2016 - Tiscali, one of Italy’s leading telecommunications companies, and Enel Open Fiber (EOF), the Enel Group company created to build the fibre optic grid infrastructure in Italy, have announced a partnership that will bring the innovation offered by the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) ultra-broadband grid to the Cagliari area.

Riccardo Ruggiero, CEO of Tiscali, stated: “We are especially pleased with the partnership with Enel Open Fiber, which enables us – beginning with Cagliari, where Tiscali has a significant broadband market share – to offer ultra-broadband services, supplementing the investments already begun with the LTE Wireless Fiber to the Home (WFTTH) access network. We are building this network with a particular focus on areas affected by digital divide, with FTTH services based on the ultra-broadband network that Enel Open Fiber is developing, providing performance of up to 1 Gigabit per second. Tiscali’s goal for the coming years is to be able to serve the majority of customers via ultra-broadband infrastructure. At the same time, Tiscali is also interested in giving EOF wholesale access on its network, in line with the provisions of today's agreement for the Cagliari-Rome connection.”

Tommaso Pompei, CEO of Enel Open Fiber, said: “We are announcing today a major partnership with Tiscali, which is part of the agreements that Enel Open Fiber has entered into with leading national operators to cable the first 10 cities provided for in the broadband development plan. This is a significant step for the Sardinia region, and especially for the city of Cagliari, where we expect to cover 80% of premises by March 2018. Tiscali customers activated on the network that EOF is building will have access to a fibre optic grid that can support transmission speeds of 1Gbps and will be brought right to their homes.”

The partnership, which is in line with the Italian plan for ultra-broadband promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe 2020, is strategically integrated with, and complementary to, Tiscali’s roll-out of its advanced ultra-broadband LTE Fixed Wireless access network, which will be developed with a particular focus on the areas especially affected by digital divide.

The agreement for the city of Cagliari provides for the migration of 20,000 Tiscali ADSL customers to EOF fibre optics by March 2018. The migration will take place in parallel with EOF’S roll-out plan for the fibre optic grid. The Enel Open Fiber plan envisages the cabling of 65,901 premises by the end of March 2018 (80% of total premises in Cagliari).

Both parties also agreed that Tiscali will provide Enel Open Fiber with two 10 Gigabit transmission links for the Cagliari-Rome connection.
