Endesa giving electric car batteries new life

A new idea from Endesa is giving new life to electric car batteries and showing just how sustainable Enel Group's e-mobility technology can become. The disposal of lithium batteries installed on electric vehicles is an important environmental issue and finding an alternative use for them at the end of their lifespan could be an important part of the development of e-mobility.

As part of the Green eMotion European project Endesa has for the first time recycled an electric car battery, using it as a storage system at a 50-kilowatt fast-recharge column in Malaga, thanks to which in 15 minutes it's possible charge up to 80 percent the battery of your vehicle.

This successful experiment carried out by the Enel Group's Spanish business opens a new door for both e-mobility and energy storage systems in general. According to estimates, by 2020 as many as 10,000 batteries will be given this new lease of life, and as part of an agreement signed with the local Malaga government, Endesa is also planning on using recycled batteries at the charging stations for public transportation included in the Victoria project.

Smartphones, tablets, cameras, watches and small electrical appliances run on ion-lithium batteries, which can be recharged and were created to replace the less efficient nickel batteries, have a very high deterioration threshold beyond which they must be replaced and disposed of in a specific way. Therefore, finding an alternative way to recycle them, lengthening their life and avoiding an excess of waste is in the interest of both the industries that use them and society as a whole.
