A new initiative has been added to the extensive range of activities carried out by the Group in the Mediterranean with the framework agreement between Enel Trade and Enemalta, Malta's main electricity generation and distribution services provider, for the supply of energy to the Maltese islands.
The five-year contract was signed by Enel Trade's Head of Global Front Office Leonardo Zannella, Executive Chairman of Enemalta Fredrick Azzopardi, and and its Deputy Chairman Sun Ji.
The Maltese energy company is undertaking a series of structural measures aimed at the reduction of power generation costs and greenhouse gas emissions through the use of cleaner energy sources. A 220 kilovolt, high-voltage alternating current - interconnection cable, with a capacity of 200 megawatts will run for about 100 km, from Ragusa in Sicily to Qalet Marku in Malta. The company is also working on the reconversion of an existing plant from oil to natural gas and the construction of a new gas-fired power plant and related LNG facilities.
Enel Trade was selected as a partner to supply electricity purchased by Enemalta from Italy, through an international selection process launched by the Maltese company in May last year. The agreement regulates conditions for access to forward and spot markets, the commercial management of the cable (which is scheduled go online in June) and the supply of connected services, including relationships with Italian institutions.
The partnership with Enemalta is an example of Enel's ability to develop customised products based on customer needs. It demonstrates the Group's leading role, not only in terms of energy generation, distribution and sale, but also in the supply of national and international services through medium-and long-term contracts.
