An abundance of different types of natural resources, an increasing demand for electricity and a stable regulatory framework are the conditions that Enel Green Power deems necessary when investing in a country. It does not come as a surprise that Morocco, which not only fulfills the three requirements but also features a rapidly developing economy, is one of EGP’s target countries in North Africa, in accordance with the 2015-2019 Business Plan of the Enel subsidiary dedicated to renewable energy.

‘Morocco is a pioneer in the renewable energy sector in North Africa, having set ambitious development objectives and backing these objectives with a stable and transparent regulatory framework. Enel Green Power has already made its entry in the country by setting up a local headquarters. We now aim to grow in the area, through the installation of megawatts,’ declared Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel Green Power, during the workshop “Italy and Morocco: Prospects and opportunities for a new economic partnership", which was held in the Moroccan capital, Rabat. The event was organized by the Conseil du Développement et de la Solidarité, and among its guests was the Italian Minister of Economic Development Federica Guidi, who met with Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane.

Renewable energy currently contributes to Morocco’s 7.6 GW total installed capacity with 2.6 GW (equal to 34 percent). The Moroccan government has launched an extensive programme to promote energy efficiency and renewable sources, and increase its solar and wind power capacities (which currently constitute about 11 percent of the generation mix) to 2 GW by 2020.

Enel Green Power’s growth strategy includes its participation in renewable energy public tenders organized by the National Electricity Office (ONEE) and the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN). The Enel subsidiary opened its headquarters in Casablanca in May 2015 in order to supervise these activities.
