Italy: the Nuova Larderello geothermal power plant

Panoramic view of the Nuova Larderello geothermal power plant in Tuscany. In operation since 1911, the Enel Green Power plant was the first to harness geothermal energy to produce electricity. Today, along with 33 other plants, it is part of the oldest and most innovative geothermal complex in the world. The more than 6 billion KWh of energy produced meets more than 30% of the region's energy needs.
