ENEL: “OBIETTIVO SVILUPPO” (“TARGET DEVELOPMENT”) THREE NEW PROJECTS TO SUPPORT RESEARCH, UNIVERSITIES AND YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

Enel LAB: 15 million euros over the next three years to support innovative energy start-ups in Italy and Spain

Energy for research, twenty research grants for young talent awarded in partnership with CRUI

Rome, June 13th, 2012 – Enel launches three new projects to support research, universities and young entrepreneurs: Enel Lab, a laboratory to support innovative start-up businesses in the energy sector, with an investment of up to 15 million euros over the next three years, “Enel Foundation”, the new Enel study centre foundation and the “Energy for Research” programme that will award 20 study grants to young people, provided in partnership with the CRUI Foundation (the Conference of Italian University Rectors).

The projects were presented today in Rome in the presence of Francesco Profumo, Minister of University, Education and Research, Fulvio Conti, CEO and General Manager of the Enel Group and Chairman of the Enel Foundation, Marco Mancini, Chairman of the Conference of Italian University Rectors and Alessandro Costa, Director of the Enel Foundation.

“The projects we are presenting today”, said Enel CEO, Fulvio Conti, “have a common goal, to ‘target development’: specifically, to promote and encourage new initiatives and research, mainly from amongst our young people, which in the coming years will be able to make a contribution to the driving forward of Italian enterprise and, more generally, to making innovation the essential tool for kick starting the economy against the current unfavourable scenario”.

With Enel Lab, Enel and Endesa will be setting up the first business laboratory to promote projects for innovation in clean technology, to be submitted by Italian and Spanish start-up businesses. The first selection of projects by Enel Lab will start in July 2012 and close in February 2013, with the six winning start-ups set to receive funding of up to 650,000 euros, with the subsequent opportunity to be mentored within the company.

The Enel Foundation, “la Fondazione Centro Studi Enel” is a non-profit-making institution, founded and entirely funded by Enel, with the aim of facilitating study and research into energy, socio-economics, sustainable development and innovation, supporting initiatives for high-level training in, and raising awareness of, the relevant issues and also providing support for new talents in the scientific field.
 
Energy for Research, the first project launched by the Enel Foundation, is a competition for the award of 20 research grants, provided in partnership with CRUI, (The Conference of Italian University Rectors), in the field of renewable sources, energy efficiency, air quality, electric mobility, smart grids, access to energy, energy policy, business and economics, corporate social responsibility and safety at construction sites. Entry to the competition is open to all Masters and PhD graduates, from the faculties of engineering, architecture, industrial chemistry, environmental science, medicine, economics, statistics, law, political science and communications. Each of the twenty selected projects will be funded by the Enel Foundation with a grant of 15,000 euros each. The projects will have to be original and involve research activities to be carried out in the ten months following grant assignation.
