Grids at the heart of the energy transition
The measures we are implementing to develop the electricity grid focus on three strategic areas: infrastructural development that concentrates on renewable energy, security of service and the electrification of consumption.
They are scheduled to expire in June 2026, with an intermediate milestone for Hosting Capacity projects set for December 2024.
we are strengthening the grid to accommodate more and more distributed renewable energy. Strengthening Hosting Capacity means increasing the capacity of the grid to host and integrate additional distributed generation from renewable sources, including through the implementation of Smart Grid operations. These operations ensure a steady increase in the share of green energy in the national mix, thereby contributing to decarbonization goals.
In order to accompany the transition to more sustainable consumption, we are carrying out measures to increase the capacity and power available to utilities to facilitate the electrification of energy consumption. These investments are designed to enhance the capacity of the infrastructure in metropolitan areas with high population density, preparing it to handle the increase in electrical loads resulting from the growing electrification of consumption.
We are making the power system more resilient through measures that aim to reduce the probability, duration, and magnitude of power outages in the event of stress from extreme weather events.
This ecosystem of interventions confirms our leading role as enablers and accelerators of the energy transition for the entire Country System.
The grid that changes the country, local areas and communities
The future of energy lies in a more digital, widespread and resilient electricity distribution network. Projects launched under the PNRR are transforming local infrastructure, enabling new models of sustainable development. This is a change that involves local areas, communities and industrial supply chains, shaping an energy system that is increasingly integrated and close to people. Within this transformation, there are also stories of innovation, rebirth and collaboration that describe the impact of the energy transition on the Italy of today and tomorrow.
